NotebookLM — Google now also calls it Gemini Notebook — is an excellent source-grounded research assistant. Upload documents, get cited answers, audio overviews, and study artifacts. For your own research, you should use it. Scriptus is not trying to beat a free Google notebook. Scriptus is a product your readers use: you set the lens, the trial or the paywall, and what a first-time reader versus a practitioner gets from the same material. The reader does not configure a notebook.

You want to study your own sources. You want audio or video overviews. You are fine being the person who configures the notebook — or you are sharing a notebook and do not need identity, entitlements, or reader billing. That is the right tool, and it is often free.

Where NotebookLM is stronger
Price. Speed. Citations for personal research. Audio and video overviews. If the job is “I want to talk to this PDF,” NotebookLM wins and Scriptus is the wrong purchase. We already say that on the homepage. We will not pretend otherwise.
Where Scriptus is stronger
Operator control. The reader does not prompt an agent into existence. You decide depth by audience. You see the questions. You can charge, or you can run it free as lead-gen. Identity and entitlements survive a refresh. NotebookLM can share notebooks; it does not become your product because you put a paywall in front of a link.
Pricing, without theater
Scriptus is vastly more expensive than NotebookLM’s free Standard tier. That comparison is only useful if you thought we were selling a study tool. We are not.
Paid Gemini Notebook limits are bundled into Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra. We will not publish a dollar grid we could not read as a clean public table on 4 September 2026. Check notebooklm.google/plans in your region.

Switching
There is nothing to import. If you already work in NotebookLM, keep doing that for research. A move to Scriptus means we train on your source material as a reader-facing product. Do not cancel a Google AI plan because you bought a book bot — they are not substitutes.
Verdict
Choose NotebookLM for your own research, or for a shared notebook you do not need to operate as a product. Choose Scriptus when the book should work for readers who will never open a notebook. If you need a DIY site widget, look at Chatbase or SiteGPT — still not Scriptus.

Can't I just use NotebookLM for free?
For your own research, yes. For a product your readers use, no. They would each configure the chat. You would not control the experience or see what they asked.
Couldn't I put a paywall in front of a public NotebookLM link?
You can gate a URL. You still do not get operator-owned identity, entitlements, or a brand you control. That is a manuscript with a lock on the door, not a published book.
Is NotebookLM the same as Gemini Notebook?
Google’s plans page on 4 September 2026 says yes — renamed in July 2026, same product, existing notebooks remain. We keep the NotebookLM URL because that is the name people search.
Does Scriptus take a cut of reader subscriptions?
No. Subscriber revenue is yours.
